The Coon Lab participated in the 2018 “Expanding Your Horizons Conference” (http://geoscience.wisc.edu/eyh) a nationwide initiative to introduce middle school girls to a wide range of career options in science, engineering, and math. Vanessa Linke and Anji Trujillo (Graduate students in the Coon Lab and Department of Chemistry), Evgenia Shishkova (Scientist in the Coon Lab) and Leah Schaffer (Graduate student in the Smith Lab and Department of Chemistry) developed exploratory demos for learning key concepts of mass spectrometry. The demos highlighted magnetic sectors, trapping potentials of quadrupoles, and ion traps. This was an opportunity to give girls a chance to interact with females scientist and share their interests and aspirations in science.
