What brought you to the Coon lab and UW-Madison?
The Coon lab has a proven track record in the field of mitochondrial proteomics and a deep expertise in MS instrumentation. This allows me to contribute my biological expertise, while at the same time expanding my knowledge in the fields of HPLC, mass spectrometry, and computation. Furthermore, the people in the lab as well as the city of Madison are great!

Research Experience
Back in Kaiserslautern, during my biology undergrad times, I very much enjoyed lectures on cell biology and biochemistry. For my Diploma thesis, I then had the opportunity to join the labs of Prof. Jan Riemer and Prof. Hannes Herrmann. There, I worked on The Significance of Sod1 Activity in the Mitochondrial Inter-membrane Space (Diploma thesis) in yeast and learned about biochemical methods in mitochondrial research. Towards the end of my thesis, I realized that systems biology approaches, and in particular proteomics, would have been tremendously helpful to better characterize the various yeast mutants I had created. Consequently, I decided to pursue a PhD in the field of proteomics. To this end, I moved to Freiburg to work in the lab of Prof. Bettina Warscheid, where I applied state of the art LC-MS based proteomics to address questions on mitochondrial cell biology. In cooperation with the labs of Prof. Nils Wiedemann and Prof. Klaus Pfanner, we worked on Defining the Yeast and Human Mitochondrial Proteomes via Quantitative Proteomics (PhD thesis).
