The Coon Lab Experience

Since 2009, 27 students have earned their Ph.D. under the direction of Professor Coon.  On average, it takes 4.3 years to complete the degree – during this time a typical student will produce 11 manuscripts, 3 first-author.  Each one of these students has had multiple job offers upon graduation.

Students in the Coon lab work on a variety topics ranging from instrumentation and software development to biochemistry. Most new lab members have no previous experience with mass spectrometry, just a passion for technology and science. Besides the coursework and individual program requirements, students in the Coon group engage in a variety of training activities. Our team approach to research simulates real-world working environments, preparing students for life after graduate school.

In addition to the rigorous research environment we place emphasis on each individual’s professional development. This includes meticulous preparation of scientific illustrations, generating manuscripts, and presenting at conferences. In weekly small group meetings, students work with Professor Coon taking on a variety of topics including how to: run a research group, give an effective lecture, write proposals, choose collaborators, select jobs, among many others.
